Objectives and contribution to the program
The main objective of this course unit is to support students in developing a critical research approach related to a management theme.
This course unit contributes to the teaching profile by preparing students to:
Acquire general disciplinary knowledge and the tools necessary for management professions: meaning that students will be able to reproduce knowledge, recontextualize it in a given situation, and use appropriate tools to carry out a defined project.
Learn to demonstrate critical thinking toward business management practices: meaning, in particular, that students will be able to question and document themselves while maintaining a critical distance from information sources and by confronting opposing viewpoints.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Prerequisites and corequisites
No prior knowledge is required.
Be able to analyze and synthesize information.
Keep up to date with economic news and the business world through readings, podcasts, videos, and other resources.
A good command of English (being comfortable with a B2 level) and basic skills in terms of summarizing and synthesizing are highly recommended.
Content
Management: this first course is an introduction based on the fundamentals of management and their perspectives in terms of organization, functioning, and business performance.
Professional integration activities: students will work in teams on a management-related issue, following a scientific approach introduced during the course sessions and applied through the various intermediate assignments to be completed.
Teaching methods
Management: lecture-based course, with commented PowerPoint presentations and video capsules.
Professional integration activities: classes in both large and small groups.
In this AA, artificial intelligence is likely to be used as an assistant to generate ideas, to search for information (search engine type), as an assistant to organize or revise a production, to (partially) elaborate a production. Make sure you use it transparently (eg. in-text citations, paraphrasing, etc...) and critically, and produce original, personal ideas. Plagiarism is an expellable offence.
Assessment method
First session
Management
A closed-book written exam. It consists mainly of multiple-choice questions. It may also include gap-fill questions, matching exercises, or diagrams to complete. The aim is to assess knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts, as well as the student’s mastery of the different variables that constitute the management function.
The use of generative AI is strictly prohibited during the written exam.
Professional integration activities.
Group work, with a final research paper and a fin oral defence. An intermediate oral presentation will also be taken into account. Attendance is compulsory for all parts of the evaluation.
IMPORTANT: it is mandatory for each student to attend the first class session in order to be assigned to a working team.
For the final written assignment, a single overall grade will be given to the team. However, in certain cases, instructors reserve the right to differentiate the final grade based on the following criteria: attendance, active participation, and the individual section of the report (quality and relevance grid, etc.).
Summative assessment also takes into account class participation (attendance and intermediate assignments, both in person and/or online), as well as the final written assignment.
Failure to comply with the submission guidelines for the final written assignment (date, time, electronic version) as published on ICHEC Moodle will be reflected in the summative assessment and may result in a grade of 0/20.
If plagiarism is detected in all or part of the final written assignment, ALL team members will receive a grade of 0/20 and a formal warning in their student record (see ICHEC procedure “Preventing Plagiarism Risks” and the study regulations – available on Moodle).
Failure to comply with the rules regarding AI, as specified in the course document, will also be reflected in the summative assessment and may result in a grade of 0/20.
The final grade for the “Management” and “Professional integration activities” components is calculated as follows:
2/3 – Management
1/3 – Professional integration activities
June and September sessions (second session)
Specific instructions and weighting will be communicated after the first session via Moodle.
Please be advised that the methods of evaluation may vary from one exams session to another. These changes are intended to align with the specific objectives and activities of each session, and to provide a fair and comprehensive assessment of student engagement and progress. Participants will be informed in advance of any changes to the evaluation criteria or format.
