Social sciences and Human Resource Management

Presentation of the Disciplinary Field

The HUM Disciplinary Field includes all faculty members teaching social sciences or Human Resource Management (HRM).

The social science courses aim, on the one hand at giving the students a clear perception of the specific point of view of each discipline, and on the other hand at enabling them to distance themselves from the theoretical knowledge and understand how each discipline works and is put to use  namely in the professional world. The epistemological issues mainly concern economics and management, via the following lectures « Economie et société - Economics and Society », «Epistémologie - Epistemology » and « Ethique économique et sociale - Business Ethics ».

Other lectures on social sciences, more particularly  "Histoire économique - Economic History","Sociologie - Sociology", "Psychologie - Psychology" and "Analyse des organisations- Organization Analysis" aim at leading students to apprehend  an enterprise as an organization and  a player on the social stage. They enable them to understand the socio-economic environment of the enterprise. They also contribute to developing the critical mind of future managers, and in this way help them to become responsible decision-makers, conscious that the impact of their decisions goes beyond the sphere where they are operating.

As to the HRM lectures, they provide students with knowledge concerning "Human Resources" : the role, the tools and the issues of human resource management. They aim at developing the capacity to analyze work situations while taking into account the human, social and organizational aspects  involved in the running of an enterprise.

The sequencing of these courses has been thought out so as to first provide specific knowledge and basic questioning, so that after that students can distance themselves from this knowledge.  Students are indeed encouraged to take over this knowledge and integrate it in a personal reflection on management practices, and on the world of business and economics in general.

Beyond their ability to analyze, students are also stimulated to suggest means of action to help a situation to develop positively,  whether we're talking of managing interpersonal relations or of acting at the level of an organization or of a company.
