Objectives and contribution to the program

This module provides an introduction to quantitative techniques for exploring and interpreting data.
By the end of the course, students will be able to select and apply a quantitative technique to answer a question based on existing data.

Prerequisites and corequisites

Basic algebra, probability and statistics.

Content

1) Introduction to a quantitative analysis tool (R-project)
a) Use of standard statistical techniques (means, variance, histograms, etc.)
2) Exploratory methods
a) Principal component analysis
b) Clustering
c) Partitioning algorithms
i) K-means
ii) Mixture decomposition
iii) Hierarchical algorithms
d) Community Detection in Graphs
i) Social Networks and Graphs
ii) Communities in social networks
iii) Measures of community membership
iv) Detection algorithms
e) Spectral algorithms
f) Text mining

Teaching methods

• Lectures and practical sessions in the laboratory using specialist software
• Practical case studies

Assessment method

The examination will be oral and will include, amongst other things, the presentation and defence of a group project, depending on the circumstances.
